Haswell-EP Xeon E5-2600 v3 Launching in Q3 2014

A new generation of the Haswell-EP family of Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 microprocessors is expected to launch this quarter. Pundits have already started speculating on the features of the upcoming Xeon E5-2600 v3 and have even gone so far as to list model numbers with their corresponding specifications including operating frequency, number of cores, size of L3 cache, and thermal design power (TDP).

The Xeon E5-2600 v3 series, designed for dual-socket systems, will be the third generation of E5-2600 CPUs. The industry sees Intel releasing entry-level, mid-range, and premium SKUs of the series, all of which likely carrying the following features:

  • The latest fourth-generation Haswell microarchitecture which includes integrated voltage regulator and AVX2 and TSX extensions to the instruction set
  • Chips having four (4) memory channels, each supporting three (3) DDR4 DIMMs with data rates up to 2133 MHz
  • Use of QPI links and PCI-Express 3.0 interface
  • Processors that fit into Socket LGA20111-3 (R3) and can be paired with C610 series chipset

Differing specs across models range on the following figures:

  • Core number: From quad core to 18 cores, these third-gen Xeons will support DDR4-1866 memory on 8-core chips and up to DDR4-2133 memory on 10- and 12-core chips;
  • Threads: 16 to 36
  • Operating Frequency: Mainstream Xeon E5-2600 v3 CPUs with 8 to 12 cores will run at frequencies of 1.6 GHz to 2.6 GHz; models with low-core count are expected to operate at 3 GHz and higher.
  • TDP: 65W to 145W; going up to 160W for high-performance workstations
  • L3 Cache: 15MB to 45MB
