A Nightmare Come True For Equifax

7th September 2017 was a dreadful day for Equifax, one of the big-three nationwide credit-rating agencies. On this day, it informed the public that a massive security breach has exposed sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and driver’s license numbers, of 143 million consumers. In addition, credit card information of hundreds of thousands more was potentially at risk. Equifax said that the breach happened between mid-May and July but detected only on 29th July. And held off from announcing the damage until 7th September.

Even a month’s preparation behind the scenes, post-leak, did not result in a comforting experience for its customers. After the public announcement, there was a surge in customer traffic to the website dedicated by Equifax for handling related inquiries. But customers were served with nothing.
